The little town of Alcàsser (or Alcacer if you prefer Castellano), just south of Valencia, will celebrate its 6th medieval market on the weekend of 5, 6 and 7 November.
This year the event wil move from the square in front of the Town Hall (where it was held in previous years) to the market square, so as to have a bit more room and to join up with the comercial fair set up by the local business people.
Especially the children can go wild on this market, because there will be lots of activities in which they can take part: there are several craft workshops, an “arena de caballeros” where they can dress up as knights and learn the elementary steps of medieval sword fighting, or they can walk around the market inside an enormous dragon (eight at a time), have rides on a pony or in a ferris wheel.
Young and old can have a try at medieval dancing and all the medieval characters that mix with the crowd – beggars, soldiers, a ferocious axe man, a wild faun on stilts controlled by an elfin, a puppetteer – will guarantee an authentic atmosphere. At night ghosts will wander around the market and every evening jugglers and acrobats close the market with a lively fire show.
And, as in previous years, there will be some 40 stalls with good quality craft work, as the market is again organised by craft association Amata, which checks that all goods on sale are hand made by the same person that stands at the stall – no cheap imports or factory stuff on this market! So if you want to start early on your Christmas shopping and are looking for originals, here is your chance! Of course there will also be a medieval tavern with roasted meats, boiled octopus, drinks and a wide choice of sweet and savoury pancakes.
The market opens on Friday the 5th of November at 6pm; Saturday and Sunday opening times are from 11 am till 2 pm and then again from 5 pm till 10 or later, according to the weather. More information, also in English, on 639 979 678. Photos of previous Amata- markets on their web site at www.amata.es; here they also announce if the market has to be postponed because of bad weather. Alcàsser lies a little to the south of Valencia town, just at the point at which the main by-pass starts.
