The medieval Bagijnetoren in the centre of Delft is to be moved on Wednesday. The 280-tonnes tower, built around 1500, has to be moved in connection with the construction of a 2.3-kilometre railway tunnel.
The Bagijnetoren has already been lifted five centimetres. On Wednesday morning a hydraulic machine will move the tower 15 meters from its original location. The Operation has taken a year of preparation, and also involved the Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed (National Cultural Heritage Service) and the city archaeologist.
