Liverpool’s medieval Sanctuary Stone put back in Castle Street after roadworks

Liverpool Sanctuary StoneA centuries-old Sanctuary Stone that has been walked over by generations has been relaid in one of Liverpool’s oldest streets.

The Sanctuary Stone has returned to its home in Castle Street, the heart of the commercial district, following its excavation last year as a result of roadworks.

And sat in the concrete with it was a newly minted coin, alongside pennies from 1937 and 1947 – the period when the boulder was last dug up.

The stone, which archaeologists say could date back to the thirteenth century, has been around almost as long as the city itself.

Mark Adams, a senior archaeological project officer at National Museums Liverpool, has prepared a special report about the Sanctuary Stone, which had been in storage since its excavation late last year.
